Sarabandes hit 1100gns high
NORTHERN Ireland bidders dominated the trade when the Sarabande herd of horned Herefords, one of the breeds highest rated on EBVs, staged an almost total dispersal last weekend.
Owner Pam Noel, who retains a nucleus herd of five head at her farm near Reading, achieved a top price of 1100gns for Sarabande Mandolin 26th.
This stylish May 1997-bred in-calf heifer traces back through Welford breeding to some of the finest lines from the famous Leen herd. She is by Sarabande Jason, the successful son of SNS Generator, who has a high Beef Value of 41. (The breeds Beef Value average is 16.)
Mandolin 26th, a heifer with show potential for next season, was served by Sarabande Xample, a Free Town Gorbachov son with a Beef Value of 46 and an impressive 400 day weight of 611kg. Buyer was R G Howe from Northern Ireland who took six lots to total £4431 and was one of three Ulster buyers who accounted for 10 cattle.
The Sarabande herd, top horned herd in the breed for five consecutive years between 1993-1998, was founded in 1971. Many leading Canadian sires have been influential in its success, both in performance terms and in the show ring.
Averages: 17 cows and calves £811, three in-calf heifers £840, six maiden heifers £511, and five young bulls £441. (Russell, Baldwin and Bright) *
