Save £80/ha with better manure use

SAVINGS of up to £80/ha could be made by cereal growers if fertiliser rates were trimmed to match the nutrient contribution supplied by organic manures.

"Up to 15% of the national cereal crop is given organic manure, but little or no account is taken of its nutrient value when deciding inorganic fertiliser rates," says ADASs Ken Smith.

"Manures are a rich form of nutrients and supply more P and K than cereals need for maintenance, so if used regularly farmers could get away with applying a little top-up N and nothing else." &#42
