Scientists approve four GM plants

SCIENTISTS judged the sale of four genetically modified (GM) plants would not endanger humans, animals or the environment.

Now European Union (EU) nations will consider allowing the sale of the four – Maize Monsanto, Maize Novartis, Maize AgroEvo and Rape AgrEvo.

A qualified majority of EU member states will be required for approval. They are likely to meet on the issue next month.

Meanwhile environment minister Michael Meacher said the Government would use its EU presidency to tighten procedures for approving GM food.
