Scientists create GM super-tree

ISRAELI scientists working at CBD Technologies have used genetic modification technology to make trees and plants grow 50% faster.

They have inserted a bacterial gene, called the cellulose-binding domain (CBD) gene, into trees and crops.

The gene affects the way cellulose is manufactured, so that trees sprout faster and fatter.

The company expects the technique to be commercially viable within five years.
