Scientists devise scrapie detection test

SCIENTISTS at Washington State University, USA, claim to have come up with an inexpensive test to diagnose scrapie in sheep and goats.

It uses an antibody to identify disease-causing proteins in the animals eyelid. Until now, scrapie could only be confirmed by examining the brains after death.

Donald P Knowles, head of the USDA Agricultural Research Service laboratory in Pullman, Washington, said the test could be used in programmes to control sheep scrapie after trials.
