Scientists ‘pressured’ to proclaim British beef safe

THE BSE inquiry heard that scientists who told the public that British beef was safe were pressured to do so by the previous Government.

David Tyrrell, chairman of the Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee (SEAC) from 1990-1995, said specialists recruited to examine and monitor the dangers were given “a falsely reassuring picture” about the effectiveness of regulations.

He said the specified offal ban had been difficult to enforce because of a lack of inspectors visiting slaughter houses.
