Scotch Premier trims jobs at Gorgie
PROCESSOR Scotch Premier Meats is to shed at least 100 jobs with immediate effect from its plant at Gorgie, in Edinburgh.
It is believed the redundancies follow the loss of a contract with one of the major supermarket chains.
The job losses have served to emphasise the problems facing the meat trade, reports The Herald.
Scotch Premier invested more than 250,000 at Gorgie last year to turn it into one of the most highly-automated and hygienic units in the UK.
Meanwhile Edinburgh City Council sources indicated there would be a major redevelopment of the entire Gorgie market area. This would eventually mean the auction marts operated by John Swans & Sons and Oliver & Sons relocating.
