Scots welcome 2.5m beef boost
By FWi staff
SCOTTISH farmers representatives have hailed the end of the 90-head limit for Beef Special Premium claims as a 2.5m boost for the finishers.
Jim Walker, president of National Farmers Union of Scotland, said the decision by UK agriculture ministers would remove market distortions.
He said: We have been working on achieving this for more than a year and I welcome the fact that the Scottish Executive has pushed our case with the Ministry of Agriculture.
Mr Walker was pleased that allowance was made for smaller farmers who feared they could lose out if claims exceeded the national ceiling.
As protection, those claiming on 30 cattle or fewer will be exempt from clawback if the national ceiling was exceeded.
This is particularly good news for the many small producers in Scotland which the EU recognises provide the backbone of many remote rural communities, said Mr Walker.
These additional payments to producers are fully funded by the EU budget.
