Scots welcome dairy-sector review

By FWi staff

FARMERS have welcomed a pledge by Scottish rural affairs minister Ross Finnie to investigate the problems affecting the Scottish dairy industry.

Mr Finnie made the announcement during a debate into the crisis in the sector in the Scottish parliament on Wednesday (5 April).

His promise coincided with the launch of a Scottish Executive discussion document titled A Forward Strategy for Scottish Agriculture.
Jim Walker, president of the National Farmers Union of Scotland, said a series of strategies was needed to drive forward the development of Scottish farming.

“Im very pleased, therefore, that our Minister is also committed to addressing the future of our industry,” he added.

Mr Walker said both the industry and the government must be quite clear that strategies without action are a waste of time.

“Projects to consider the future of our beef and lamb sectors, and now the dairy industry, will only be of value is they are followed through with clear action.”
