Scottish beef exports months away

SCOTLAND is not ready to export beef for many months, mainly because doing so is too expensive, reports The Herald.

Date-based traceability rules and European regulations requiring cattle to be slaughtered in designated abattoirs have increased overheads.

Alistair Donaldson, head of the Meat and Livestock Commission in Scotland believes it will not be until the middle of next year before exports will start.

But The Herald reports that discussion have taken place already between leading players in the Scottish meat trade to set up a processing venture.
