Sheepmeat exports to France soon?
AN early resumption of exports to France of whole carcass ewes and mature hoggets is being anticipated in both trade and producer circles.
But the announcement last week by MLC director general, Colin Maclean, that agreement had been reached has proved premature.
The Scottish Office confirmed that no bilateral agreement had been concluded and that specified risk material regulations continued to ban the export of ewes or hoggets with permanent teeth erupted.
But an official said progress was being made and that the French were keen to resume imports.
"There is still a lot of detail to sort out and SRM rules would have to be modified to allow the export of whole carcasses." *
