Sherwood heifer steals show
Sherwood heifer steals show
A SERVED heifer from the Sherwood View herd of Messrs RN Wilson topped the trade at 2300gns at the Kirkby Thore sale centre, Cumbria, despite the main business of the day being the dispersal of the Carltontowers Holstein herd.
Sherwood View Leadoff Mae, by Fraeland Leadoff and out of a Twizzlefoot dam, generated the liveliest bidding from the crowd who levelled the 16 Sherwood served heifers at £1021.
Leadoff Mae was in-calf to Comestar Leader and was part of the Notts-based herds consignment of autumn calvers following the dispersal of Messrs Wilsons milking portion last year. She was bought by Lancs dairy farmer Aubrey Greenhalgh on behalf of one of his regular Northern Ireland clients.
Another Leader daughter, Sherwood View Leader Sunny, realised 1680gns to G E Anderson, Lisburn, Co Down, who also gave 1450gns for a Leadoff heifer.
Carlton Farms Partnerships old established Carltontowers herd from Goole, East Yorks had not bought any females since 1972. The dispersal saw prices twice reach 820gns, Kirkham, Lancs buyer Tom Cowell secured the first – Carltontowers Lincoln Donna EX. She was due to calf her fifth in December to Jorrielake.
The same price was paid by Mr Anderson for Carltontowers Premium Wendy who gave 10,000kg with her second and is due in September to Robthom Integrity.
There was a strong trade for heifer calves with TF Duncan and Co, Co Antrim paying most at 440gns for a six-month-old daughter of Indianhead Red Marker.
Averages: Carltontowers – 87 cows and calved heifers £671; 28 served heifers £506 and 21 maiden heifers and calves £268. Sherwood View – 16 served heifers £1021 (Norton and Brooksbank). *
At 2300gns, this Sherwood View entry heads for Ireland.
