Slaughter for scrapie cases

Slaughter for scrapie cases

SHEEP and goats with scrapie will be compulsorily slaughtered under legislation laid before Parliament on Wednesday. The new law will take effect from July 29.

The move, driven originally by advice from the governments BSE advisory committee, SEAC, follows industry consultation more than a year ago on the ramifications of introducing compulsory slaughter.

Compensation will be equal to the average cull ewe market price, although a MAFF official added that if pedigree breeders had receipts or proof that they had paid more for their animals then that would be taken into consideration and compensation could be higher.
