Slow-down in German sales figure
A SLOWDOWN in rate of growth of tractor sales in Germany – Europes second biggest market after France – saw an increase of just 1.8% to just over 28,000 units last year. That compares with a 6.5% increase in sales through 1998 over the previous year.
The favourite brands of German farmers – Fendt and John Deere – gained market share at the expense of Case, New Holland and Massey Ferguson, all of which dipped by much the same amount – 1.4%.
The Case-IH / Steyr combination nonetheless held on to its third-place ranking, ahead of Deutz-Fahr.
Deere is chasing the Fendt tractors traditional leading position in Germany, however, gaining almost 2% market share to sell 5685 registered tractors. Fendt moved ahead just 0.3% to mark up 5929 sales.
Among the smaller volume sellers, Renault improved as its Deere-engined Ares series continues to gain credibility in this discerning market, improving 1998 sales by 23% to 482 units. Valtra also continued to make progress, lifting sales of Valmet tractors by 19% to 371 units.
In outright sales, both makes continue to trail Belarus and Mercedes-Benz (both on 2.1%) with Zetor splitting them with a 1.6% share.
Italys Landini outshone all-comers in terms of sales growth, however, with a 40% increase to 337 sales last year.
Among the global manufacturers, the combination of Fendt and Massey Ferguson sales ensured AGCO kept a firm 25.6% share of the German market, with Deere also outstripping the 19.7% share that CNH Global inherits from Case and New Holland.
Same, Lamborghini, Hurlimann and Deutz-Fahr sales, all of which retained the same share of the slightly bigger market, gave the Same Deutz-Fahr Group a healthy fourth-place ranking.
