Smithfield first-timer scoops record carcass price
A RECORD price was paid for a carcass at Smithfield today (Tuesday), making it a showing debut to remember for one Smithfield visitor.
Mark Millers 311.5kg Limousin cross heifer scooped the top prize and went under the hammer for £9611. Thats £31/kg or £14/lb.
“Its the first time Ive ever shown anything in my life,” said Mr Miller. “Im a commercial beef farmer who got persuaded to put an entry into Smithfield.”
The carcass, grading R4L, came from Little Down End Farm, Forthampton, Gloucestershire and is destined for the tables of top London restaurant Rules.
A Limousin cross steer won the supreme championship and the Kings Cup for the best exhibitor-bred animal. In the sheep ring, the supreme championship was taken by a pair of pure Texel lambs.
