Something for everyone at southern sale

BIG numbers of cattle with price tags to suit all pockets drew dairy farmers from as far away as Lancashire and Devon to the dispersal of the Kingsbridge Holstein herd at Lewes, East Sussex.

Owners Conyboro Farms saw the 228 cows average £603 with a total of 293 head levelling at £573. Every lot found a new home.

Auctioneer Chris Norton said: "There was something for everyone. Buyers who were looking for extra cows, but did not want to head towards four figures were willing to take on senior milkers that would still have a couple of lactations in them and looked good value at around £400 and less."

Kingsbridge Wade Beattie topped the price list at 1150gns paid by K G Freeman and Son, Faringdon, Oxon. This third daughter of Parker Aero Wade is out of an EX-classified dam tracing back to a cow bought from the famous Sharcombe herd that enjoyed such success in the 1970s.

Messrs Freeman are soon to take over the tenancy of Old Park Farm, home of the Kingsbridge herd which was established over 40 years ago by Lord Monk Bretton who is now retiring from farming. The herds more recent infusions of breeding have come from Joylan, Hayleys and Wintersell.

Messrs Freeman also gave 1100gns for the fourth calver Joylan Michael Arlene, a daughter of the 1994 Royal Show champion Sonnhalde Arlene Jubilante.

Best of the in-calf heifers at 1000gns was Kingsbridge Int Missy, a Robthom Integrity daughter out of another Joylan dam. Kingsbridge Int Sybilla led the maiden heifer offering at 920gns.

Other leading bids included a 900gns call from D A and S Gray, Leighton Buzzard, for the second calver Kingsbridge Brock Amy to add to their Graythorn herd.

Loading most cattle onto a wagon was Henden Manor Estates, Sevenoaks, Kent, which bought 26 head paying 850gns twice for Kingsbridge App Idol 2nd and for a cow by Wade.

Averages: 228 cows and calved heifers £602; 12 autumn-calving heifers £739; 28 spring-calving heifers £473, and 24 maiden heifers and calves £326 (Norton and Brooksbank in conjunction with South East Marts). &#42
