Spain warned over olive oil over-production
EUROPEAN UNION (EU) farm commissioner Franz Fischler told Spanish olive oil producers they should “shoulder their responsibilities” and avoid over-production as member states got ready for the first wave of Common Agricultural Policy reforms.
He said regions producing too much olive oil should pay higher charges than in the past to encourage them not to allow production to outstrip consumption.
Reforms of olive oil and tobacco are being considered before those for larger
farming sectors which are not due for implementation until January 2000.
