Spanish contract for Welsh lamb
A CONTRACT to supply a trial consignment of Welsh beef to Spain was due to be signed as farmers weekly went to press.
Final arrangements for the deal were made when Welsh Lamb and Beef Promotions and the St Merryn Food Group attended this weeks Alimentaria 2000 food and drink show in Barcelona.
"We are in negotiation with a number of customers within Spain," said John Dracup, St Merryns procurement director. "Alimentaria enables us to demonstrate the quality of Welsh beef to leading catering and wholesale butchery outlets serving the quality market."
At the exhibition, the Eroski supermarket group confirmed that it planned to increase sales of Welsh lamb by 50%. The Welsh promotional organisation also announced the launch of a Welsh lamb brand – Agnello da pascolo qualita naturale – for the Italian market. *
