Spanish toxic spill ‘a crime’, believes Government
THE Spanish Government believes a “presumed ecological crime” caused the toxic spill that destroyed farmland, contaminated rivers and killed wildlife in the south of the country last Saturday.
Isabel Tochino, Spains environment minister, said it would be up to the courts to make the final determination of whether a crime had been committed when a mine reservoir owned by Boliden ruptured.
The Government has asked a provincial judge to investigate whether the company is to blame.
A crisis commission has been announced to co-ordinate the recovery efforts.
Greenpeace activists were caught up in violent clashes with security guards when they took chemical samples from the waste reservoir yesterday.
