Sparkling showing by English wines

A CLUTCH of recent awards have earned English wines the grudging respect of growers across the Channel, reports The Independent.

It says The RidgeView Estate in Ditchling Common, East Sussex, is producing bubbly to challenge produce from Frances Champagne region.

Mild winters, shelter from rain and limestone ridges and greensand soil create a favourable microclimate at Ditchling Common.

And Nyetimber vineyard in Pulborough, West Sussex, recently won its fourth consecutive gold medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition.

Nyetimber plans to double its current output to 50,000 bottles a year.
