Sparkling stock from Stardale attract top bids
JIM and Robert Burrows Stardale herd glittered at Lancaster last week when a fine selection of their fashionably-bred stock achieved the days strongest bidding.
The Burrows from Preston entered 11 animals for the Lancashire Holstein Dairy Sales fixture and made the top price of 3400gns. This came for Stardale Ideal Vaakje, a Maplewood Ideal daughter giving 33kg a day. She stays in Lancashire with D E and M Booth, Earby, Colne.
Stardale Astre Stella 5th, bred out of a Skychief dam, was pulled out by judge Harri Evans to head the young heifer class. With four generations of VG dams behind her, this heifer made 3000gns to M and G Booth, Keighley, West Yorks.
Mr Evans, who runs the 70-cow Ceinwen herd on Anglesey, praised the standard: "There were some beautifully balanced heifers with excellent type and the cow class produced a very good line-up."
Mr Evans awarded the championship to Whitburn Lady Yorkshire Lover 16th, "a modern, superbly-balanced heifer with a great udder and four strong, black feet". From the ruck of heifers offered by John Loftus, this Langacres Lover daughter has a stall reserved at the National Holstein Show. She made 2800gns to Andrew Wilson, Cupar, Fife.
A Fatal daughter from Stardale made 2400gns to Messrs Cottam. Holmrook, Cumbria, and the cow class winner from local vendors Messrs Butterfields Ingleview herd made 1200gns to M and G Booth. She was giving 47kg a day.
Top bull price was 1200gns paid by G E Buckley and Sons, Doncaster, for Aireburn Amplify from George Moorhouse and Sons, North Yorks. He is by Etazon Lord Lily and out of a top German cow family.
Northern Ireland buyers were busy taking advantage of lower mainland prices and made up two shipments of 15 and six heifers.
Averages: 11 cows £804 and 95 heifers £875. (Norton and Brooksbank with Lancaster Auction Mart.) *
