Spirited bidding for Bricknell B&Ws

FIVE cattle topped 2000gns at the Border Counties Holstein Friesian club sale at Carlisle, where the average price was over £1330.

Deep pedigrees and fashionable sires drew warranted attention to the consignment of cattle from the noted Bricknell herd of Yorkshire breeder Gerald Carter.

And it was one of these that stood champion and generated the sales most spirited spate of bidding. Bricknell BB Ruby 5th, a Bricknell Blackstar calved heifer out of a Warden dam, was chosen by judge Mr J Cochrane, Appleby to head the line-up.

This grand-daughter of the great Gold Star cow Bricknell Ruby 80th was giving 32kg a day and was bought by T Forsyth, Newton Stewart for 2500gns. She was sired by a home-bred Blackstar x Shoremar Nannie bull.

The Bricknell cattle made the top five female prices and also took the reserve championship with Bricknell Inspiration Ruby 3rd, another from this York-based herds renowned cow family. Buyers at 2200gns were &#42 Buchanan and Son, Girvan, Ayrshire.
