Starcross heifers sold after merger

YOUNGSTOCK from the Starcross herd was sold recently, following the amalgamation of two Cheshire dairy units.

The 160 head from Derek and David Beresfords herd based at Arclid Hall Farm, Sandbach were mainly by proven Canadian bulls.

Buyers from Scotland and the south who took bidding to 2500gns for animals from this herd, with an average of 7437kg for cows and heifers.

Smart served heifer

Top call came from W Smith, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire for Starcross Park Ivy 2nd, a smart served heifer by A Juniper Park. Served in December to Startmore Rudolph she is out of a 9400kg Counselor dam.

The Weeton Board Chairman sired Starcross Chairman Whitie 5th, out of a Dreamstreet Colonel cow, made 1750gns. This heifer is in calf to A Juniper Park and went to Stan Woods, Penrith.

Mr Smith was in again at 1600gns to take Starcross Lindy Melody, also in-calf to A Juniper Park.

At the same money Mr Shard-low of Whitby secured the served heifer Starcross Horace Rose.

There was a steady trade for heifers around 1400-1500gns and among the most active buyers was the Severn Trent Water Authority who took 17 head for its Midlands estate.

AVERAGES: 63 spring calving heifers £1202; 29 recently served heifers £796; and 62 maiden heifers £490. (Wright-Manley)
