Steady end to the year
Steady end to the year
THERE were buyers for 213 Holstein Friesian cattle at the final sale of the year for the North Western breed club at Crewe where a top of 2000gns and an average of £758 were seen.
Denis and Ina Lomas of Congleton, Cheshire, are no strangers to the top spot here and this time it was with the bought-in heifer Bringlee Wintec Lonesome, bred by Lees Dairy Farmers, Market Drayton, Shropshire.
Lonesome, a mid-November calver by Beechpike Wintec, is out of a Mark Horace dam and goes back to a contract mating cow by Saughall Supreme. She was giving 28.2kg on the day and was claimed by J * Sloan and Sons, Mauchline, Ayrshire, at 2000gns.
Of the 270 cows and heifers – and nine bulls – catalogued, 50 were not forward, but the remaining entry, the biggest at this venue for some time, met a steady trade.
Judge John Barnett, a former chairman of the North Western Club, who runs the Burwren herd at Wrenbury, Nantwich, favoured Peter Dixon-Smiths smart calved heifer Huxley Ferrari Manor from his herd at Tugby, Leics.
This daughter of Etazon Ferrari is out of a Peartome Jackpot cow. She made 1200gns to David Dawson, Atterton, Nuneaton.
Holly Valiant Jenny, a Chairman Valiant calved heifer from John Eardley, Market Drayton, heads for Jeremy Millingtons Felton herd at Oswestry, at 1350gns.
North Wales buyers were among the most active in the large crowd which also included several active bidders from Northern Ireland. Among those was N Morton, Armargh, who claimed Fieldside Rye Girl 60th, a fresh calver by Astre Starbuck that made 1060gns. She was from Eccleston, Preston breeders Tom Jolly and Partners.
Averages: 39 FR cows £688, four SR cows £693, 167 FR heifers £775, two SR heifers £855. (Wright-Manley) *
