Still combining winter barley

NORTHUMBERLAND farmer Mark Vickers, near Alnwick is still combining winter barley.

“Wed normally have combined winter barley by now. It is affecting our drilling patterns for oilseed rape and now we have to utilise some set-a-side.

He is half-way through combining Regina winter barley, which was desiccated. “It has 1.85% nitrogen when dried, which will make the high nitrogen contract.” The yield is about 5t/ha (2t/acre), which he says is not bad considering the conditions.

“We had a wet spell last week, but this week has been fantastic. Yesterday [22 August] we were combining at 17% moisture.”

He expects to be into some early Claire after the weekend. There are 120ha (300 acres) of wheat. He will also start spring barley next week.
