Stolen farm machinery recovered in Rutland

A series of stolen plant machinery recoveries has highlighted both the risks facing farmers and the vigilance of rural policing in Rutland.

Early on Saturday 21 March, a local farming WhatsApp group reported the theft of multiple items of farm machinery.

Within hours, a red Manitou telehandler, stolen in the early hours from between Corby and Oakham, was located hidden in a field just off the A1 at South Witham.

Over the weekend, further stolen machinery was recovered, including a New Holland excavator, a Hyundai power road sweeper, and an Ifor Williams trailer. These items had been stolen over the previous two nights.

The total value of machinery recovered runs into tens of thousands of pounds. One other Manitou telehandler (FX22 RCF), taken from Barnsdale in Rutland, remains outstanding.

Security steps

Farmers are being reminded of the importance of security measures, including alarms, CCTV, trackers, serial number documentation, and regular equipment checks.

Local police and farming representatives stress that reporting all thefts, however minor, is essential to provide accurate statistics and support targeted rural crime enforcement.

Police say the recoveries in Rutland this weekend serve as a reminder of both the vulnerability of high-value farm machinery and the difference vigilance and swift action can make in protecting rural communities.

The incidents also underline the persistent threat from organised theft, with multiple vehicles and trailers sometimes travelling in convoy across county borders.
