Straw growers sign deal with power station
MORE than 70 farmers in East Anglia have already signed contracts to supply a new £60m power station which will burn 200,000 tonnes of straw each year to generate electricity.
The go-ahead for construction of the plant, claimed to be the biggest of its kind in the world, comes after the completion of financial negotiations.
It is to be built near Ely, Cambs, and its fuel will come from farms within a 60-mile radius. Work is expected to start before the end of September.
David Williams, chief executive of the firm behind the project, Energy Power Resources, said more than 70 farmers had already signed contracts to supply about 160,000 tonnes of straw per year.
Further supplies would be negotiated before the plant is ready to operate in two years time.
The power station will generate 31 megawatts (MW) of electricity, enough for about 65,000 homes. *
