ARABLE farmers in England will be able to use the internet to submit their subsidy claims from the middle of March.
The Rural Payments Agency said it was sending information to producers who used, or expressed an interest in using the e-IACS form. Agency spokeswoman Penny Corkish said growers should refer to the Frequently Asked Questions on the agency website at www.RPA.gov.uk to learn how the system would work. There will be no charge for digital certificates, for those farmers with internet access and suitable hardware and browser tools, she said.
The subject of electronic transmission of IACS forms has sparked active debate on the Farmers Weekly Interactive online discussion forum. Some growers believe entering their farming details online is more time consuming and question how alternations will be made to maps electronically. But other farmers say the opportunity to change the details of claims up until the deadline is an advantage of using the e-IACS system. *
NFU arable support schemes adviser Richard Wordsworth said that the outbreak of foot-and-mouth had prompted greater use of the internet and he expected the 836 out of 70,000 eligible producers who submitted e-IACS forms to be joined by many more.
