RECORD prices were paid for Suffolk sheep at Perth last weekend when a ewe lamb sold for 23,000gns and a gimmer shearling made 16,000gns.
The annual collective sale for John Sinnett (Stockton), Jimmy Douglas (Cairness) and Jimmy Wilson (Bridgestone) once again drew a bumper crowd. But despite bold attempts by many aspiring flocks to secure a slice of the action, the top trading was between the big names.
The 23,000gns call came from Jimmy Douglas to add the ewe lamb that was supreme champion at this years Royal Show to his noted Cairness flock in Aberdeen-shire.
The ewe lamb was consigned by John Sinnett and was sired by the £23,000 Cairness Goldeneye.
Mr Douglas received 16,000gns from Flock of the Year owner Tom Bailey, Co Meath for a gimmer shearling by Stockton Slocum that is full sister to Cairness Goldeneye. Another 12,000gns boosted the Cairness takings when Mr Sinnett bought a gimmer by the 68,000gns Muiresk King of Diamonds. Both gimmers are in-lamb to Stockton Storm, the 54,000gns top priced ram lamb at Edinburgh this year.
Cairness also had 5500gns for a Pankymoor Prelude sired gimmer shearling, in-lamb to Stockton Stardust. Buyer was Iain Barbour, for his Solwaybank flock in Dumfries. Mr Bailey took another Cairness gimmer by King of Diamonds at 3600gns.
