Suffolk sale a big draw
TOM Bailey, one of the biggest spenders to hit the Suffolk sheep world in recent years, staged a successful reduction sale from his Glenho and Baileys flocks in Eire last weekend where prices reached 8500gns.
A packed house of over 400 breeders, including a contingent from the mainland, gathered at Tattersalls, Fairyhouse, Co Meath, to see the results of some of Mr Baileys hefty investment.
In 1998, he paid the record price of 75,000gns for Stockton Almighty bred by John Sinnett, Worcs, and went on to invest another 50,000gns in Stockton Caesar whose sons have sold to 20,000gns.
It was a son of Caesar, aptly named Stockton Caesarson, that sired the sales top priced gimmer. She is bred out of a Cairness ewe that cost 13,000gns by Cairness Golddust, with the million £ earning ram Pankymoor Prelude as grand-sire.
The gimmer, bought by Cairness flock owner Jimmy Douglas from Aberdeenshire, is in-lamb to service sire Glenisla Sydney, a 26,000gns ram by Crosemanor Commandeur.
Jimmy Douglas invested another 4000gns in a gimmer by Stockton Almighty and out of a Cairness Court ewe. She had been served by Glenho Genereux, who is bred from Sydney and one of the best Suffolk rams Mr Bailey says he has ever bred.
Jim Hoare, who runs the Dowdstown flock at Maynooth, Co Kildare, paid 2400gns for a Caesarson gimmer out of a Fordafourie Flashdance ewe and in-lamb to Genereux.
Co Roscommon breeder Joseph Miley favoured a gimmer by Cairness Kickback out of a dam by the successful early 1990s sire Greyhill Man of the Moment. She was in-lamb to Almighty and realised 2200gns.
There were three 1800gns bids including one from Jerry Killalea, Galway, to take a Caesarson gimmer. She is the first to be sold from one of the flocks most successful ewes and was in-lamb to Glenisla Sydney.
Mark McMenamie from Co Donegal gave 1800gns for a Caesarson gimmer going back to Glenisla High Command and in-lamb to Almighty while the third 1800gns call came from Martin Conway, Omagh, for an Almighty gimmer served by the 7000gns Kickback son Laurelbank Dexter whose progeny have sold to 4200gns.
Well known North Yorkshire breeder Richard Bulmer paid 1400gns for a ewe lamb by Sydney and out of an Almighty sired dam while John Sinnett invested an equal figure in a gimmer by Wells Worth and in-lamb to Genereux.
Averages: 73 females 1070gns. (J P and M Doyle) *
