Sugar beet demo back in business

SUGAR beet harvesting demonstrations are making a return this autumn after a 13-year year absence following the outbreak of rhizomania in the UK

Beet UK will run on Wed 21 Oct on a brashland site near Lincoln, close to the site of Cereals 96, courtesy of the Nevile Estate and Aubourn Farming. Admission is free.

The main aim for British Sugar, which is co-organising the event with the East of England Agricultural Society, is to encourage even more efficient production. Last year the UK was the third most efficient producer in the EU. An even better result will help safeguard quota in future negotiations, it notes.

BS will also preview its new computerised Crop Profitability Initiative at the event. The interactive package aims to help growers identify the best ways of optimising profit on their individual farms.

The event includes 18 harvester plots and eight cleaner/loader lines where machines will be in action from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm. An area of static trade stands will include over 50 exhibitors representing all aspects of beet production.

Sponsors of the event include chartered accountants Whiting and Partners, NatWest Bank, farmers weekly and Crops.

&#8226 Strict anti-rhizomania precautions will be in force on the day, including wheel baths and foot dips. Visitors are urged to clean vehicles before arriving on the site. The host reserves the right to refuse admittance to dirty vehicles.
