Sunshine needed to finish wheat
DORSET farmer Brian Lock tried to start combining Claire winter wheat on Monday (13 August), but the crop was too wet and not fit enough.
“After one round of headland, the moisture was 26% and one strip up the middle was 21%. We need sunshine and favourable conditions.”
The farm grows Claire and Consort for seed and Group 3 wheat purposes.
The farm is based on stone brash and chalk soil. There were difficult winter conditions. This has contributed to Maris Otter winter barley having disappointing yields. The farm has also combined some herbage seeds.
