Survey confirms GM contamination
ORGANIC crops grown close to genetically modified (GM) crops run a risk of contamination, according to a government report published yesterday (Thursday).
Dr Phil Dale, the author of the report, who works for the John Innes Centre, said the “buffer zones” around GM crops were not failsafe.
Even doubling or trebling existing buffer zones between trial GM crops and other “would certainly not eliminate the chance of contamination.”
Environmental groups were buoyed by the report, which supported their long-held view of possible cross-pollination.
The Soil Association warned organic farmers to notify the organisation if their fields were within six miles of a GM site, so they could monitor their status.
