Thin wheat optimism

LOW bushel weight wheat may not be the poor energy provider for animal feed rations that many think it is, according to Leeds University researchers.

Now they want more thin wheat samples to test.

Funded by the HGCA grower levy, the project aims to assess the energy value to poultry, pigs and ruminants of different varieties with a range of bushel weights.

So far bushel weight has not been found to be a good indicator of energy value, says project leader, Mike Wilkinson.

Anyone with a low bushel weight sample, of known variety and not blended, should contact Helen Miller (0113-233 3054 Fax: 0113 233 3066) or e-mail: h.m.miller@leeds.ac.uk
