‘Third way’ BSE hint worries French
FRENCH farmers and consumer groups are concerned after hints from agriculture minister Jean Glavany of a “mysterious third way” in which BSE could be transmitted.
BSE cases in France continue to rise despite measures to combat the spread of the disease through infected animal feed or from mother to calf, reports The Daily Telegraph.
At the weekend, Mr Glavany suggested a third way of infection, unknown to science.
Some farmers and consumer groups suspect Mr Glavany knows more than he is letting on.
“Either the comments were thoughtless, or he knows something and is preparing the public,” said Marie-Josée Nicoli from the Federal Consumers Union.
But other farmers believe there is no mystery, and accuse feed manufacturers of flouting the ban on bonemeal in feed.
