Tony Martin wins right to appeal
TONY Martin, the Norfolk farmer jailed for murder in April, has won the right to appeal against his convictions, reports The Independent
His solicitor believes trial judge Mr Justice Owen mis-directed the jury, by telling them to convict if they doubted Mr Martins version of events, it says.
Mr Martin was jailed for shooting 16-year-old Fred Barras at his isolated Norfolk farmhouse in August last year.
He was also convicted of wounding a second burglar, Brendon Fearon, 30, with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Solicitor Nick Makin said Mr Martin would be allowed to challenge the wounding charge at the Court of Appeal, reports The Independent.
This will automatically allow him to appeal against the murder conviction at the same time, the paper adds.
The Daily Mail says news of the appeal came a day after the Lord Chief Justice recommended Mr Martins minimum sentence by one year to eight years.
