Top prize goes to Scot bidder

A RECORD-BREAKING sale of bulls at the British Limousin Cattle Societys Portadown fixture saw the top-priced entry being sold to Scotland for 7500gns.

Although there had been intense interest among Northern Ireland breeders in Jim Quails outstanding young bull Lynderg Romeo, they were out-bid by Alistair Vance of the Bridge House Farming Company, Whithorn, in south-west Scotland who bought the bull over the phone.

Romeo combines a wealth of breeding on both sides of his pedigree. He is by the French bull Ocean, a past Balmoral champion, while his maternal grand-dam is Curragrange Tiara.

Now 20-years-old and suckling her latest calf, this remarkable brood cow has had a tremendous impact on the Lynderg herd at Banbridge, Co Down.

Romeo, who is rated in the breeds top 10% on performance figures with a beef value of 23, stood supreme in the show classes under judge Leanne Rodgers, who runs the Draperhill herd at Ballynahinch.

A team of bulls by Ashmara Nuts, the new stock bull in Robin Colemans herd at Glarryford, were in demand and included the reserve junior champion Glarryford Regent. He realised 6200gns to Will Corrie, Newtownards.

Herdmate Glarryford Ring-leader clinched the junior title drawing praise from the ringside for his great shape and mobility. He made 3700gns.

Averages: 44 bulls £2367; five heifers £1712 and four maiden heifers £1229 (Automart). &#42
