Tories attack planning policies

THE Conservative Party is expected to launch a fierce attack on the governments planning policies today (Tuesday), claiming it has failed to protect the countryside from development.

John Redwood, the Conservative environment spokesman, is expected to outline his partys policy in a document entitled A Common-sense Revolution for Town and Country.

Promises include urban regeneration, a commitment to make the planning process easier and a greater role for local authorities.

The document sets out plans to stop greenfield development and introduce more protection for wildlife.

A former chairman of the Town and Country Planning Association argues in the Financial Times that the expansion of greenfield land is essential to meet future housing needs.
