THE Conservative government banned research into the risks to human health from mad cow disease, the BSE Inquiry was told yesterday.
Written evidence submitted by the current and former directors of the Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS) claimed they were prevented from taking part
in studies investigating bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
Sir Joseph Smith, who headed the PHLS from 1985 to 1992, and his successor Diana Walford, said they were greatly concerned by their exclusion from research into possible links between BSE and a new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.
