Tractor driving down M6 pulled over by police

A JCB Fastrac tractor was stopped by police after being driven on the M6 motorway in Cumbria.

The driver was reported to police and officers from Cumbria Constabulary’s roads traffic police team escorted the vehicle off the motorway in the early hours of Sunday (17 September).

Afterwards, police issued a warning to other tractor drivers concerning the laws.

Cumbria Roads Police (@CumbriaRoadsPol) tweeted: “Tractors aren’t allowed on motorways, even if you think ‘it’s quieter and safer’ at 1am.

“Driver reported & escorted off #M6.”

Rule 253 of the Highway Code prohibits certain slow-moving vehicles and agricultural vehicles from using the motorway.

Some Twitter bloggers pointed out that this Fastrac would have been allowed to travel on the motorway in certain circumstances.

For example, if it was run on white diesel, had a tachograph and the driver had a Class 1 licence entitlement to ride on motorways.

But Cumbria Roads Police replied: “Very true, but this one had none of these. Agri load, red diesel, reg/taxed as agri veh, no tacho.”
