Tractors getting bigger
THIS year will not see any records broken in terms of numbers of tractors sold, but its a different picture when it comes to tractor size.
According to the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) average tractor size in the first nine months of 1997 was 108.4hp – 2.2% up on last year.
Taking an overview of the whole tractor scene – including compact tractors – the market is currently running 16.8% down on last year.
Regionally, the east Midlands, Yorks and Lancs, and the east have taken the largest brunt of the fall in tractor sales with the east topping the chart with a 27.3% plunge.
On a brighter note, Scotland and Northern Ireland appear to have fared better than most regions with just 2% and 4.5% falls in sales, respectively.
