Tributes paid as NFU Livestock Board’s David Barton passes away

News has emerged that NFU Livestock Board chairman David Barton passed away unexpectedly while loading cattle on his farm in Gloucestershire on Thursday (16 July).

Paying tribute, NFU president Tom Bradshaw said: “David was an incredibly passionate advocate for the farming sector, and his loss will be felt across the industry and beyond.

“Our thoughts are with the family and we are doing all we can to support them at this truly sad time.”

Mr Barton was born and raised on his family farm in the Cotswolds, producing grass-fed suckler beef and cereals, as well as running a small flock of pedigree poll Dorset sheep.

He was first elected as NFU Livestock Board chairmen in 2024, having previously served as vice-chairman under the then incumbent Richard Findlay.

He had also worked with the AHDB as a strategic farm to improve farm profitability and efficiency.

Mr Barton was re-elected earlier this year for a second term as NFU Livestock Board chairman, promising to continue representing the beef and sheep sectors by presenting a “strong” case to government on issues such as sustainability and animal welfare.

Earlier this week, he shared his thoughts publicly on the new updated Beef and Lamb Environmental Roadmap, explaining how it was important to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from livestock while maintaining numbers and profitability.

Commenting on social media, Cheshire dairy farmer Phil Latham described Mr Barton as “a great guy” and a “tireless campaigner”.

“I always enjoyed his company and counsel when discussing TB issues and concerns we both shared,” he wrote.

Mr Barton’s family has asked for people to respect their privacy and give them the space they need.
