Trust calls for partridge shooting ban

ENGLISH partridges are so rare that they should only be shot on farms where owners take steps to conserve them, says the Game Conservancy Trust.

The wild grey or English partridge, an indicator species used by the government to gauge the health of the countryside, has declined by 85% since 1970.

Numbers have been hit by the use of herbicides and the removal of hedges from the 1950s, reports The Daily Telegraph.
