Two in row for champ bull

FOR the second year running Ben Wyands Simmental bull, Brinkton Fraser, took the supreme championship beef title at the Lincolnshire Show, adding another win to his long list of championships gained this year.

He beat off a strong challenge from SH Lees Blonde DAquitaine cow Sutton Melissa, champion of the Other Pure Breed class. She picked up equal points to the Simmental, but the bull, all the way from Norwich, received four first prizes against her three, to give him the top accolade.

Judge John Horrell, from Peterborough, awarded Brackenhurst Colleges Jersey cow the dairy interbreed championship, describing her as the most complete dairy animal parading on the day – an impressive cow with an excellent udder.

Her success rounded off a competition dominated by this Notts-based college. It scooped the interbreed and breed titles with its mature cow Glanmor Imperial Carys, and won breed reserve with its dry cow Gwenby Basils Daybreak. These two animals were also in the interbreed winning group of four.

Its the first time Brackenhurst has shown Jerseys at Lincoln. Farm manager Mike Saxby changed the herd from black-and-whites to Jerseys for commercial reasons last summer. "They offer a higher stocking rate and give us opportunity to add value to our milk through processing."

Local breeder David Inman took the sheep interbreed title with his home-bred Suffolk shearling ewe; her father won the interbreed championship at the Show two years ago. Show reserve, and best ram at the show, was the Greens Charollais, described as an outstanding tup by judge John Read, although he felt the Suffolk, an excellent example of the breed, deserved to win on the day.

Cambridge judge John Millard put the Welsh boar from George Cary above the Large White sow and Pure White champion from A Gregory to win the Pig of the Year Award.

The boar was a very correct pig with good legs and tidy feet which would stand up well commercially, he said. From a distance the Large White was a pretty pig with a perfect underline. But it was probably not as durable as the Welsh pig which he believed would perform equally well on a 10-sow unit in Lincs or a 400,000-sow unit in the USA.

Two years in a row…. Ben Wyands Simmental bull won the beef interbreed title for the second time.

It was a clean sweep for Brackenhurst Colleges Jerseys. This cow, Glanmor Imperial Carys, won the dairy interbreed title.

George Carys Welsh boar had tidy feet and was was very correct, said the judge who awarded him pig of the year title.

Best on the day…. David Inmans Suffolk ewe just came out on top at Lincoln.
