Two more die from CJD

TWO more people have died from new-variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (nvCJD), the human form of BSE.

The Department of Health said the two victims died last November, taking the total number of human deaths from the disease to 32.

Twelve people died during the first 11 months of 1998, 10 in 1997 and 10 in 1996.

Scientists say that it is too early to predict how many people will develop the fatal brain disease because nvCJD has a long and unknown incubation period.

The disease is widely accepted as being a result of eating BSE-contaminated meat during the 1980s.
