UK fined £14.5m for ewe claim failings
THE UK government has been charged £14.5m by the EU commission this week for inadequate ewe premium controls in 1993.
The commission found there had been inadequate on-farm inspections of ewe premium claims. There were too few inspections and half of them took place outside the retention period. The UK also failed to cut the risks of fraudulent double claims on the same animal by continuing its policy of two claim periods, the commission said. *
