US peanuts and sugar crop subsidies maintain status quo

TOBACCO, peanut and sugar crop subsidies will continue to be part of the USAs $49bn 1998 agriculture spending bill.

Two proposed amendments would have lowered sugar and peanut prices. They are priced higher in the US than on international
markets.

The elimination of price supports, loans and import restrictions could have saved sugar and peanut consumers in the US more than $1.5bn a year.
