US threat to organic standards


THE United States Department of Agriculture will close its consultations on a new national standards for organic farming on 16 March.


The proposals would make a mockery of organic production all over the world, writes George Monbiot, in The Guardian, because they would permit produce to be labelled “organic” in the US which have been genetically engineered, irradiated, treated with additives and raised on contaminated sewage sludge.
