US years ahead in GMresearch
REGULATORY delays in Europe for genetically modified crops are forcing still more research investment to the US. Speaking at a meeting on GM oilseed rape and sugar beet at IACR Brooms Barn, Tom Jolliffe of Advanta Seeds said 80% of genetic modification work is now carried out in the US. Ten years ago it was 50% US, 50% rest of the world. "The result is that the US is now five to 10 years ahead of Europe in the genetic advancement of agricultural crops," Dr Jolliffe said. *
