Virus hurt country kids, inquiry told

A SCHOOLTEACHER and community leaders are giving evidence on the third the Devon public inquiry into the foot-and-mouth crisis.

Mark Raven, head teacher of Black Torrington Primary School, criticised advice he was given about the disease from Devon County Council.

His school was closed for a week during the height of foot-and-mouth and some children were unable to attend even when the school reopened.

“Any advice we had was not specific enough,” said Mr Raven, referring to problems transporting school pupils through foot-and-mouth areas.

“I kept a diary while the school was closed and, reading it again now, it is actually quite a depressing document.”

Mr Raven said he encouraged his pupils to draw pictures and make paintings in an attempt to help them come to terms with the crisis.

“I think the children have come through this well but I am sure that sooner or later it will come out again,” he said.

Mark Goodman, organiser of the Devon Federation of Young Farmers Clubs was set to reveal the effect of the crisis on local young people.

His written submission to the inquiry has cited stress, isolation and missed schooling as examples of the emotional impact on youngsters.

Career options have slumped, social activities have been curtailed and Young Farmers Clubs have unable to raise funds for six months.

Barbara Thomas, vice-chairman, of the Devon Association of Parish Councils was due to discuss the effect of the crisis on farmers.

Her evidence was likely to focus on public access and behaviour; and suggest recommendations for tackling future epidemics.

Paul Fitzpatrick a curate from Okehampton was due to provide evidence outlining his experience of counselling and support for local people.
